MVP Accessibility Essentials

15% of the world has some form of disability. Basic accessibility is not just ethical, it is good business.

MVP Accessibility Minimum

  • All images have alt text
  • Sufficient color contrast (4.5:1 ratio)
  • Forms have proper labels
  • Site works with keyboard only
  • Focus states are visible
  • Headings are in logical order (h1, h2, h3)

Easy Wins

  • Use semantic HTML (button for buttons, not div)
  • Add skip-to-content link for screen readers
  • Ensure links describe their destination
  • Do not use color alone to convey information
  • Make text resizable without breaking layout

Testing Accessibility

  • Lighthouse accessibility audit (built into Chrome)
  • WAVE browser extension
  • Navigate with keyboard only (Tab, Enter, Escape)
  • Check contrast with WebAIM Contrast Checker

What Can Wait

  • Full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance
  • Screen reader optimization
  • ARIA roles for complex widgets
  • Accessibility statement page
  • Third-party accessibility audits

Common Mistakes

  • Empty alt attributes on meaningful images
  • Low contrast text (especially light gray on white)
  • Form inputs without labels
  • Removing focus outlines for aesthetics

A Lighthouse accessibility score above 90 is achievable for most MVPs with minimal effort. Aim for that.
